The Los Angeles City-owned Griffith Observatory was established in 1935 to make astronomy and observation free and accessible to everyday Angelenos. The Griffith Observatory Foundation was established in 1978 to support the Observatory’s mission of science literacy, education, and public astronomy. As the most-visited public observatory in the world, Griffith Observatory has welcomed over 90 million enthusiasts since it opened. In 2025, the Kao Family Foundation provided support for the Observatory’s STEM-focused School Programs.
